In “The Necklace”, Guy de Maupassant expresses true love through the various doings Mr. Losiel did to satisfy Madame Losiel. Whereas in O’Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” true love is shown through both Dell and Jim Dillingham. “The Necklace” tells an interesting story about the unsatisfied life of a beautiful woman, unhappily born into an average family of clerks who wanted to marry into wealth but sadly found herself settling down to marry an average clerk who did nothing but appreciate and love her (pg1). Guy de Maupassant reveals that Madame Loisel's only wanted to experience what it would be like for one night to be with the higher class. “She had such desire to please, to be sought after, to be clever and courted (pg2).” Mr. Loseil only wanted to do what makes his wife happy and was willing to sacrifice whatever he had to, to get the job done. An invitation to an event would have brighten up the life of Madame Losiel or so her husband thought but it only showed how ungrateful and self-centered she really is. Instead of willingly accepting the invite Mr. Losiel had to buy new clothes and convince to borrow jewelry from a friend to fulfill the appearance Madame Losiel felt she needed. Which brings the question does Madame Losiel really love her husband or was she only settling because of low self esteem and felt she couldn’t get anything better than him. In “The Gift of the Magi” O. Henry makes the statement that the wisest gifts are those from the heart, based on the admirable characters, hardships they face, and the strength of their love. Della and Jim living a life of poverty still seem to find the true love in their relationship. They worked with what they had and made the best out of life.
