Bisphenol A (BPA): * An organic compound used to harden plastics for water bottles, baby bottles, the lining of canned goods and many other products. * BPA is the poster child for food-packaging scares. It leaches into water and food, and is detectable in the urine of 93% of U.S. adults, according to Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) estimates. Sodium nitrite & sodium nitrate : * is added to cured meat like cold cuts and hot dogs to keep their color and to give them flavor. * They are used to prevent botulism, a deadly disease transmitted through food. * Unfortunately, during the digestive process, they form cancer-causing nitrosamines in our intestines. Arsenic: * Arsenic is a naturally occurring element widely distributed in the earth's crust. * It occurs naturally in soil and minerals and may enter the air, water, and land from wind-blown dust and may get into water from runoff and leaching. * Exposure to higher than average levels of arsenic occur mostly in the workplace, near hazardous waste sites, or in areas with high natural levels. * At high levels, inorganic arsenic can cause death. Exposure to lower levels for a long time can cause a discoloration of the skin and the appearance of small corns or warts. Nickel: * Nickel is a naturally occurring element. * In the air, it attaches to small particles of dust that settle to the ground or are taken out of the air in rain or snow; this usually takes many days. * Pure nickel is a hard, silvery-white metal used to make stainless steel and other metal alloys. * Skin effects are the most common effects in people who are sensitive to nickel. * Workers who breathed very large amounts of nickel compounds developed chronic bronchitis and lung and nasal sinus cancers.
