Cheerleading a Sport or Activity It has always been a controversial topic between sport players and other people if cheerleading is really a sport or an activity. Obviously, cheerleaders are going to sit there and say no matter what that what they do should be consider a sport. On the other hand, people that play actual contact sports will say that no, it is not a sport and should not be considered one. The one thing actually athletes will give you is that some types of competition cheerleading could be considered at sport but cheerleading like high school cheerleading should not be. A sport is defined as a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in it competitively. The last part of the definition is what makes it hard to determine cheerleading as a sport. Most cheerleading teams don’t go to regular competitions and compete regularly so by this definition they can’t be defined as a sport. The purpose of high school cheerleaders is to stand on a sideline and get the crowd involved in the cheers. Standing on a sideline and yelling out cheers is not considered a sport. Majority of people are able to do that. On the other hand competition cheerleading is where a form of cheerleading can be considered a sport. Competitive cheerleading includes physical activity. Competition cheerleaders learn to tumble like standing back flips and full layout twists. Cheerleaders do perform lifts and tosses like where they throw fliers in the air, who are held by bases in different positions that require strength and cooperation with other teammates. There are guidelines for competition cheerleading. Guidelines being where the routine has to be completed in less than three minutes and 15 seconds and the cheerleaders are required to stay within a certain area.
