Flowers for Algernon Flowers for Algernon is a novel by Daniel Keyes, it was published in 1966. The main character in this book is called Charlie Gordon, an intellectual challenged human, who has an operation to increase his IQ. Should he have had the operation? The next following paragraphs will discuss about the possible answers to this question. The first two paragraphs will discuss why it was a good idea for him to have had the operation, however the last 2 paragraphs will discuss why it was not a good idea for Charlie to have had the operation.

When Kesey was in the process of writing the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest the Korean War was still a fresh memory, and then in shock came World War II after. According to Kesey war can cause trauma to patients. Following the daily beast article many of the patients in the nove One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest suffered from war trauma. For example, “Old Colonel Matterson thinks he’s still in World War I, Billy Bibbit suffered a breakdown in ROTC training when he couldn’t answer the drill officer’s command without stuttering, and McMurphy, who received a dishonorable discharge in the Korean War for insubordination” (American Dreams).

Cognitive science, in definition, can be defined as a scientific study of intelligence and the mind (Encyclopedia-Cognitive Science, 2003). Almost every introduction made formally of cognitive science stresses that psychology, neuroscience, education, philosophy, linguistics, biology, anthropology, and computer science are principal branches to the scientific research of cognitive science (Encyclopedia-Cognitive Science, 2003).
