CHARACTERIZATION OF CLARA IN “CLARA’S DAY” The main character of the short story ”Clara’s Day” by Penelope Lively from 1991 is a girl called Clara. Clara is fifteen and a half years old, and lives with her mother who is a dentist’s receptionist with flexible hours. Her parents are divorced, and her mother has a new boyfriend; Stan. Clara does not have a very open relationship with her mother. When she one day takes of all her clothes at school, she does not tell her mother when she asks if she has any news. But when her mother gets a letter from the Head telling what had happened at school, her mother laughs at her. She does not get upset, she just laughs and says that it was the last thing she would have expected, because she has always been such a prude.…show more content…
It is very clear in this quote: “He patted Clara’s arm and Clara froze. She went completely rigid, as though she had turned to cement, and when eventually she moved a led it seemed as though it should make a cracking noise.”(P.24 ll.37-41) In the beginning of the story it is clear that Clara does not have a good vision of herself, as well as it is in the end, when her mother is telling her boyfriend how shy and embarrassed Clara was of herself when she was little. Clara has a lot of respect for her teacher and the Head. You can see it in this quote: “would you like to go home? She asked, and when Clara said that she wouldn’t thank you, Mrs. May hew went on briskly.” (P.22 ll.4-6) Clara only hangs out with a couple of her classmates. We see that in this quote: “you still going around with Liz Raymond? Mostly, said Clara. And Stephanie.” (p. 23 ll.13-14) Clara likes being at school. She finds it peaceful, and when her teacher asks her if she would like to go home, she says
