The term “rhetoric” is defined as how writers and speakers use their words in order to influence their listeners. This plays a role of great importance when working with and reading works of writing in order for the writers to attempt to portray their overall message to others. Rhetorical analysis is the process of using critical thinking skills to break down something into different parts in order to interpret how those certain parts fit together. It is not necessarily based on opinion or includes a summary. The main goal of rhetorical analysis is mainly based around how the author writes and how they make their points, instead of keeping the focus on specifically the topic of the writing.
The autobiographical nature of the first passage in “Love and Honour and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice” introduces the reader to the apparent truth and reality of the story, signalling also what is to be expected in the rest of the collection. To be a truly effective writer or even just a simple story teller; you need substance. A sense of being that will draw the reader or listener in, as if they themselves were in the story, helping them to feel the surroundings of the character within the pages of the book.
By using different literary methods authors are able to give their readers a better understanding of the message behind the piece of work. Using methods such as themes and symbolism allows readers to find the underlying meaning of the story rather than just simply reading something with no meaning or emotion behind it. While reading Robert Frost’s Poem The Road Not Taken and Eudora Welty’s short story A Worn Path, people get a sense that life is a lonely place full of sacrifice at times. Although these two pieces are different, their use of symbolism gives readers a better understanding of the characters in each work and figure out their real struggles with the choices they make. Literature is meant to take its readers to another place and allow them to become part of it, whether it be a story or a poem or play.
Both Orwell and Dillard are very good at crafting a story from memory. They both use methods of story telling that engages the reader and makes you want to read more. Orwell carefully uses his words to give you as much feeling and thought as you read his story; where as Dillard writes her story in a way that progresses it with just enough information to keep the story fast and interesting. I believe that I write my stories more in the way Dillard does than Orwell. I usually write a story using minimal information and using just enough atmosphere so that you know what is happening as the story progresses.
Theme Theme is the basic concept of a story. You could write it in one sentence and have it all right there in front of you and understand a story before even reading it. Instead, the author wants to teach us this by putting his theme into a situation where we can see it reoccurring. When we empathize with characters in a novel, that's us connecting to the universal truth that's being given. This sounds kind of like the moral of a story but its slightly different.
Not only having control methods to shape a story, you need a protagonist to guide you through it and really make you predict what might happen.
