Characteristics of Heathcliff The characters that Emily Bronte brings to life in Wuthering Heights are arguably some of the most complex characters in English literature. Wuthering Heights tells the story of Heathcliff, an orphan that Mr. Earnshaw found on the street and brought home to raise with his children, Hindley and Catherine. After years of harsh treatment from Hindley, and Catherine agreeing to marry Edgar Linton, Heathcliff decides to run away. Heathcliff returns three years later a completely changed man. The remainder of the book shows Heathcliff getting back at everyone who has ever wronged him until the day that he died. His love for Catherine, his need for revenge, and his mysterious nature all define Heathcliff as a character. Heathcliff’s love for Catherine defines him a great deal. This is first evident when Catherine’s ghost visits Mr. Lockwood. Heathcliff begins to yell at her ghost to come in and calls her “my hearts darling” (Bronte 36). After Catherine’s death, Heathcliff yells out to her to haunt him saying “may you not rest as long as I am living” (Bronte 208). He even goes as far as to dig up her grave to see her face again (Bronte 354). His love for her is evident through these actions. Heathcliff’s need for revenge shows itself throughout this story. This is shown when Heathcliff marries Isabella, then makes her “Edgar’s proxy in suffering” for causing Catherine’s illness (Bronte 180). He takes out his revenge on Hindley by funding his gambling addiction. This in turn made Heathcliff owner of Wuthering Heights as well as gave him control over Hareton after Hindley’s death (Bronte 232). Heathcliff sought revenge on Edgar again when he forced Cathy to marry Linton in order to gain control of Thrushcross Grange (Bronte 335). Heathcliff feels the need to seek revenge from everyone who he feels has ever wronged him.
