These things can alter the history of America if Blacks didn’t exist. Similar to the history of America, the politics of America would not stay the same without the existence of Blacks. Many policies in existence today would not be present. Ellison states, The nation could not survive being deprived of their presence because, by the irony implicit in the dynamics of American democracy, they symbolize both its most stringent testing and the possibility of its greatest human freedom(83). Blacks started off as slaves
During the Antebellum Period, slavery was used on a scale that had never really been reached before. The main use of slaves was forced labor on plantations. However, slaves were also forced to perform sexual acts, among other things. Slaveholders, as well as people who did not agree with slavery, knew that slavery was vital to the United States development in becoming a world power and breakaway from the Crown. Without it, the work would not have gotten done, or as quickly as it did.
Many died to hands of whites for their participation in these rebellions. Whites of the Southern states tried hard to keep slavery the way it was but with the steady growing number of free educated blacks in the Northern states grew the desire for slaves to obtain the same. In the North, blacks were able to obtain an education, work as well as own their own stores. Eventually, Abraham Lincoln got into office and many Southern Whites believed he sided on the abolishment of slavery so they made their states separate from that of the Northern portion of the United States. Lincoln supported the Union, which were the Northern States which held free blacks, and gave the Confederate States an ultimatum to join back with the Union or war will begin.
As America had a Federal system of government it was possible for laws to differ significantly between states as each state had its own government. The Thirteenth Amendment to the constitution, made slavery illegal, the 25 years after the civil war were efforts were made to make America a fairer society and to rebuild the southern states. This period was known as Reconstruction. In this period, two additional constitutional amendments were delivered in an attempt to give African Americas the rights they had been denied for so long. The fourteenth Amendment (1868) gave citizenship rights to all people bon in the USA and was an attempt to assure the rights of previous slaves.
Even to today, this is still happening, a superior race, we try to say that everyone is equal but no African Americans would believe this, but this is all starting to change now that the US have a African American president. Reconstruction In the Southern states, many African Americans demanded equality in 1865 - they felt they were unequal in economic, social, political and legal aspects. Durings 1865 Reconstruction Confederate style was
In the south the Union wanted slavery and in the North they were against slavery. Before the Civil War the United States had many acts to protect slavery. They stopped the slave trade and importation of slaves under military order. Right after the civil war the 13th amendment was passed, many changes were made. The amendment gave African Americans more rights, even though it gave them more rights they had a lot of other issues.
I understand where Freeman is coming from, but he doesn’t seem to fully grasp or understand the meaning of Black History Month. It means more than sharing stories and history about famous important black Americans. It means more than the rights they well deserved, or the freedoms they overcame. It’s the important picture behind all of it. I think it’s the celebration of change, the month that sets hope for other issues that strike our country daily.
Violence played a huge role in the outcome of the Civil War. If abolitionists continued using moral-suasion to fight slavery, the outcome of the war would have been very different. “More than half a century after the violent end of slavery of Haiti they remained committed to the conservative tactic of moral suasion” (36). Eventually “American abolitionists had run out of patience” and realized that moral suasion was delaying abolishment, and other tactics were needed if they wanted to win the war against slavery (39). Like “the electric spark, which fired [Toussaint’s] soul” and inspired many
The separation of African-American slave families is a thing that was happening for a very long time and I think that it still affects the nowadays African-Americans living in the USA. The trauma has been so profound and influential that it still exists in the minds of the slaves´ descendants. I would like to focus on some of the sociological and psychological issues which are connected with slavery and which are also a part of Uncle Tom´s Cabin plot. The ideal of domesticity has been reversed, forbidden and trodden down for the African-Americans and the impact of slavery is still playing an important role in their lives. They are still considered inferior by some people.
A lot of the states’ laws had to be overcome in order for the act to become effective such as Jim Crow laws. These laws made African Americans feel as though they were relegated to the status of second class citizens. Jim Crow laws prevents blacks from voting due to illiteracy, social class, and/or poverty. It did take some muscle from the federal government, the attorney general’s office and executive orders from the president to make sure civil right laws were enacted. But it was all worth it.
