When I think of a quality NCO the first person that comes to my mind is SSG Fredsti, my first squad leader in the army. I remember he was the epitome of what it is to be a soldier. He was always on time, and you could never catch him in a substandard uniform. To me it was as though he had an answer to any problem that would arise. Any problem or situation that he or our squad faced he would have an answer for. So in this essay I will discuss the characteristics that I believe make a quality Non-Commissioned Officer based on my experiences in my military career so far. I will also discuss the type of judgment he should display both at work and at home. There are several characteristics that make a major difference between an average NCO and a quality NCO. There are few words that really stand out in my mind that make a quality NCO: decisiveness, dependability, military bearing, initiative, knowledge, and discipline. The Army Core Values play a very important role in being a quality NCO, both at the workplace and everyday life at home. I will elaborate on what they mean to me, and my strengths and weaknesses of each one. I will first begin by telling a story that was once told to me by 1SG Amsden. “There once was a very successful bridge builder. He built the most beautiful bridges all over the world. He was one of the most famed and loved bridge builders of his time. The public loved him so much because he built these very large and magnificent bridges that made their day to day commute so much easier. But one day this bridge builder was caught giving another man a blowjob”. 1SG then looked at me and said “He was once known as a famed bridge builder, now he’s only known as a cock sucker.
