Mariama Ba's first novel So Long a Letter, reflects some of her experiences, even though she claims that it is not autobiographical. Since its publication, it has been a recommended text in both the secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other countries. It is also widely read in both the Francophone and Anglophone African countries. So long a letter is a novel that gives us more insight of the female's condition in Africa and the Islamic religion at large. In the novel we see Ramatoulaye, a woman that has been abandoned by her husband and companion of thirty years Modou Fall, for a very young girl of nineteen years old and her daughter's best friend Binetou. Five years later after Modou Fall's marriage to Binetou, he dies of an heart attack leaving Ramatoulaye with twelve children and Binetou, a young widow.…show more content…
It is a long letter from Ramatoulaye to her close friend Aissatou, who had divorced her husband Mawdo Ba, after he took a second wife. She left with her four children to the United State and began a new life. She sent Ramatoulaye a car to help ease her transportation problems. The novel tells us of Ramatoulaye's experiences, sufferings, travails and hope for the future. The letter is written at a point when Ramatoulaye finishes her mourning and is ready to start a new life. The letter is also by way of reply to a letter she had received from her dear friend
