Due to the strong social and literary influences, Charlotte was drawn to literature and began writing at a young age. She attended college and after a couple years she married an artist names Charles Walter Stetson. After giving birth to their daughter she was plagued by severe bouts of depression and psychosis. In an effort to get herself well she separated and later divorced Stetson and moved across the country to California. Her experiences with mental illness and social oppression greatly influenced her writings as seen in “The Yellow Wallpaper”.
The book “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” was extraordinary. The author Ann Brashares did an amazing job connecting to teenage girls. I felt that the girls in the story went through many of the same struggles that girls my age go through. This author, Ann Brashares won the Quill Award for Young adult/teen and the Book Sense Book of the Year Award for Children's Literature. I think she wrote this book to connect to younger readers, and maybe see if they can connect with the same problems that the girls in the story were going through.
As the story progresses, the meaning of home also changes. Later on, from the difficulties she faces throughout her journey, a home was simply wherever she had freedom. In fact, losing a loved one helps an individual to prepare to face similar situations in the future. For example, Addy loses so many people throughout the novel that she eventually gets used to it. To handle the death of her first baby, Addy decides to leave Detroit and find another home: "The wind shook the windowpanes and the house on Chestnut Street groaned at the loss of yet another soul. Addy was still weak from the efforts of her labour, and still sore and bleeding, but she knew she had to leave and she had to leave today" (Lansens 271).
