A Worn Path Eudora Welty’s, A Worn Path, is about an elderly African-American woman in the 1930’s named Phoenix Jackson, whose love for her grandson takes her on a long and difficult journey. Phoenix’s mission is to make it through the Mississippi woods on her way to town to get medicine from the doctor for her sick grandson. She is faced with many physical, mental and racial obstacles and has to overcome adversity throughout the course of her journey. Phoenix Jackson is a very feeble, old woman who clearly should not be trekking through the forest alone. She first hears a noise in the bushes and warns the wild animals in an effort to show her determination.
in the begging of the story phoenix’s skirt gets caught in a thorn bush and that symbolizes her life going through a rough time. then later on Phoenix goes to cross a river and lifts her skirt up so to keep it from getting wet and that symbolizes her rough times being lifted from upon her. "We is the only two left in the world. "This quote by Phoenix is really important, because it shows how secluded she is from society, but also how important her grandson is to her. That she would think of him and her as the only two people that truly matter.
I’ve never understood how doctors manage to choose between professional duty and military doctors. What ever happens just remember one thing, staying alive is a victory.” He clearly advised Wen about the tough conditions, but Wen having the courage she still wanted to continue the journey. 1. Parvana’s Journey written by Deborah Ellis says a lot of things about the concept of journeys. One of the main things that I have found is that in a journey it may be hard and it may even be impossible like what Parvana had to do in disguising herself as a boy in order to find her family in all of Afghanistan, however you can overcome the challenges faced in the journey with perseverance and eventually with the right attitude you can overcome any obstacle that any journey throws at you. This novel also says that in the journey you meet new people like what Parvana did when she met Asif and Leila and Hassan while on the journey. Parvana’s journey also suggests that when you go on journeys changes happen, which happens when Parvana found her long lost mother and sisters but lost her dear friend Leila at the end of the journey.
Worn Path: Symbolism In short, you could say that “A Worn Path” describes the journey of an elderly black woman named Phoenix Jackson who walks from her home to the city to get some medicine for her sick grandson, but it is so much more than that. Phoenix faces many obstacles in her path and she has to overcome all of them to get to the city. She over comes all of these obstacles, not only physically but emotionally as well. Symbolism also presents itself in many parts of “A Worn Path.” When one begins to analyze the symbolism in this story, one should begin at the title. According to Hamm, Jackson’s path is worn not only because she has traveled it many times, but because it has been followed by countless, self-sacrificing others.
A Worn Woman In Eudora Welty’s “A Worn Path”, the main character, Phoenix Jackson, an older, black woman sets off on a long journey to the nearby town, Natchez. Along the way, Phoenix encounters many obstacles such as long paths, wild animals, and people. In addition, she also overcomes racial prejudice. Phoenix finally makes it to the city and receives the free medication for her sick nephew. She walks the worn path because of the love she feels for her grandson.
But she knew that she must continue for her grandson and it shows that you should not always trust that the advice given is the best. Phoenix Jackson was determined to travel down the worn path to reach town. Determination was a key factor to her success down the path but I think that fate was on her side and it helped her through. For example, Phoenix crossed a creek by a log. She closed her eyes and it was fate that got her across safely.

The short story, “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty is filled with symbolism necessary to convey the message intended by the author. This message is one of courage and dedication on the part of the main character, Phoenix Jackson, an old African American grandmother, on a journey to town for medicine for her grandson. It is the symbolism, however, used by Welty, that takes this story to a higher level of distinction on the part of Jackson’s heroic characteristics. The story begins with the description of Phoenix Jackson aptly symbolized with various metaphors that express her age and her commitment to her task at hand. For instance, “She was very old and small and she walked slowly in the dark pine shadows, moving a little from side to side in her steps, with the balanced heaviness and lightness of a pendulum in a grand-father clock.” .
