Character analysis of Bilbo Baggins Bilbo Baggins is the main character in “The Hobbit”. Throughout the book we are focused on Bilbo and his actions, and by no doubt he is the most important character of the book. Bilbo Baggins is a honourable young hobbit, as the books title refers to, who lives in a cosy and comfortable hobbit-hole in The Hill . As a hobbit, he has no facial hair, hairy leathery feet, and is the size of half a human. He loves food and enjoys smoking his pipe, and the importance of his pipe is illustrated in the start of Chapter 2, were he nearly goes back from his journey because he has forgotten his pipe at home. Bilbo lived a calm and peaceful life, with a daily routine. As a fellow Baggins, he was well respected in the neighbourhood, because he never adventured or did anything unexpected. Bilbo’s ancestors the Tooks were completely opposite of the Bagginses, they were a clan noted for being adventurous and wild. However, when Gandalf a mysterious wizard and a bunch of dwarves lead by the royal prince Thorin Oakenshield approached him with a quest, something “Took-ish” awakens inside him and he dreamed of great mountains and exploring caves . He accepted the offer to take over a dwarvern stronghold guarded by the infamous dragon, Smaug. As the adventure begins he is scared and doubting if he made the right choice, but he gradually develops and gains more courage and turns into a cunning burglar. We also experience Bilbo’s desire to please and to show his worth to the others. This is clearly seen in Chapter 2, page 52, Bilbo’s mission is to investigate a fire in the woods, he successfully gathers a decent amount of information, but he wants to impress Thorin and the dwarves, so he tried to pickpocket one of the trolls. This was his first proper mission, where his burglar-skills were put to the test, and he manages to steal a key to the
