Asian American Gerald Trahan ETH/125 July 21, 2011 Jere Wilson Asian American The Asian American population of 17.3 million people in the United States as of 2010, which comprised of 5.6 percent of the total population in the United States, was a higher number then I was expecting. And also 2.6 million people that are Asian American that are five and older speak Chinese at home and more so after Spanish, Chinese is the most widely spoken non-English language in the United States. Fifty percent of Asian Americans that are twenty-five years or older have a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education, where it compares to twenty-eight percent of all Americans in that group. This number almost doubles all the other groups. Eighty-five
They feel the Democrats take their votes for granted and the Republicans are against them particularly as the majority are poor. Voter turnout for Whites was 66%, 65% of Blacks turned out to vote while Hispanic and Asian turnout rates were much lower and similar at about 49%. In relation to the 2004 President Election the voting rates for Blacks, Hispanics and Asians increased by about 4% points while the White voting rate decreased by 1%. Of the 5 million additional voters in 2008, approximately 2 million were Black, 2 million Hispanic and 600,000 Asian. These statistics show that ethnic minorities have made up the majority of additional voters, presenting the importance of ethnic minorities in the US political system.
“In 1900, nine out of 10 minorities were African American. In 1998, Blacks made up less than one-half of all minorities, and their share is declining. Hispanics, with a 1998 population of 30 million, are the second largest minority, accounting for 40 percent of U.S. minorities,” according to the Population Reference Bureau, (PRB, September 1999). “The U.S. Census Bureau projects that Hispanics will outnumber non-Hispanic Blacks by 2005,” (PRB, September 1999). “Asians accounted for 13 percent of minorities in 1998, while American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts made up 3
The rich are 1% of the population while the middle class and the poor made up the other 99%. “As of 2007, the top 1 percent of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers).” This quote points out the issues in distribute of the wealth in the US. There is a social problem with the distribution of income. Income is what people earn from work but is also interest earned dividends and any other royalties that they earn. The problem with distribution is that the top 1% or the rich while 99% is the middle class or the poor.
In the 2000, there were 20,000 White people working for Microsoft, and 544 Black people working for Microsoft. That is the most incredible statistic I could find. 5) Racial discrimination is a serious problem in the Judicial System. About 98% of the Judges are White. Black men are 8 times more likely to be put in prison then White men.
− Inequality − We live in an unequal society, stratified by wealth − a few people get a lot of the total income, a lot of people split up the remainder − Graph of US wealth distribution in 2005: − The richest 20% of the population owns about 85% of all the wealth in the country − The next-richest 20% owns about 10% of all the wealth − Leaving less than 5% of the wealth of the country to be divided among the remaining 60% of the population − The poorest 40% (not far from half of the population!) owns so little of the national wealth that it is not even visible on the graph. − Some estimates as of 2009 suggest that the richest 1% of Americans hold almost 50% of all American wealth − Source: Norton and Ariely, “Building
It is suggested that Nationwide, low-income Americans vote at much lower rate than wealthier citizens, which mirrors the reality that more than three quarters of all citizens in households with incomes over $75,000 are registered to vote but less than half of citizens in households earning under 15,000 are registered ( Fleishmann, 2004). There is an important lesson learned in understanding the correlation that exists between non-voting members of society and lower economic and social
In 2008, 40% of the prison population was black, even though blacks only made up 12% of the US population. A study conducted by the Rand Corporation shows that black Americans and Hispanics generally receive longer jail sentences than white people convicted of similar crimes. Black males have a 32% chance of going to prison at some point in their lives, compared to only 17% for Hispanics and 6% for whites. A study of the death penalty showed that the odds of receiving a death sentence are 3.5 times higher among those whose victims were white, as opposed to victims of an ethnic minority. Despite these surveys, little has been done to change the justice system.
Furthermore, the non-Hispanic Whites population will slightly decline even with the burgeoning elderly population because of healthier lifestyles and improved health care services available. Hispanics are expected to increase by 188% and account for nearly one-quarter of the nation's population although, The United States Census Bureau believes many Hispanics born in America claim Whites on census surveys. Asians, however, are expected to triple to over 33 million by 2050. Historically, America has been a "Black and Whites" country with Blacks accounting for nearly 13% of the current population. By 2050, the Black population will increase roughly 15%, making them the second largest minority group in America.
Since the mid-1950s, suicide rates around the world have risen by 60%. Rates among young people have risen even faster, to the point where they are now the age group at highest risk in 35% of the world’s countries. The specific demographics, however, vary from country to country. China’s pattern, for example, is very different from that of most other countries. China has a suicide mortality rate of 23:100,000, with a total of 287,000 deaths by suicide each year.
