Chapter 8, pg 304: When Antivirus Software Cripples your Computers 1. What management, organization, and technology factors were responsible for McAfee’s software problem? Windows XP Service Pack 3 combined with McAfee Virus Scan version 8.7 is incompatible. McAfee’s virus scan caused Windows XP machines to crash and fails to reboot. The management team should have made sure that users received a warning about a particular file being deleted. McAfee claimed the problem resulted from “inadequate coverage of product and operating systems used.” 2. What was the business impact of this software problem, both for McAfee and for its customers? Many customers and companies lost their data and were unable to reboot their computers. McAfee lost millions of dollars and they lost a lot of customers. The customers lost a lot of personal data along with other media that they stored in their computer. 3. If you were a McAfee enterprise customer, would you consider McAfee’s response to the problem be acceptable? Why or why not? McAfee’s management team tried to hide what happen to prevent more possible damage with their stock and company, because of this I would of accepted there response but I could see why a lot of customers just decided to leave McAfee. It is easy for me to say I accept there response because I didn’t lose anything but I can image how the people felt that lost a lot. 4. What should McAfee do in the future to avoid similar problems? A lot of testing should be done in all systems that the virus protection software operates in. Maybe they should also produce a video that helps the customer recognize certain possible treats to there system before it
