PERCEPTION OF LPU FOREIGN STUDENTS ON FILIPINO EXOTIC FOODS BITUIN GONGONA LAXA ONGBECO CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study When it comes to travelling, most of us pledge ourselves to eat the country’s best delicacies. However, there are some people who are fond of eating unusual delicacies known as the exotic foods. They find it thrilling and exciting to taste the weirdest food in this planet. Although some exotic foods may not be good to your health, there are countries where eating these unusual delicacies have already been part of their tradition and culture Exotic Food is a term that is applied to culinary items that are considered unusual, novel, or taboo from the perspective of an individual’s native culture. As for the Filipinos, eating foods such as balut, dinuguan, frog legs, adidas or chicken feet, isaw or chicken intestines are both considered normal or peculiar. Some people found it strange and weird to eat an exotic food but for some its part of their leisure and adventure. The unusual dishes may not be too good to our sense of sight, smell, touch and taste but those who love to eat strange food find pleasure and satisfaction. The concept of a food is distinguished as exotic or taboo when an individual don’t have any exposure to a certain culture or group of people who normally eats the dish or is usually part of their diet. Taboos are usually formed because cultural beliefs about other aspects of social practice clash with unfamiliar practices of another culture. An example would be Buddhists not eating beef because they consider cows higher than human beings, and Catholics eating them because it is in their normal diet. Different foods are categorized in regards on whether they see it as a regular source of dietary nourishment or not. The Philippines is indeed one of the wealthy nations in terms of food products
