They lied about getting a warrant and in turn let a killer walk away from the situation with no punishment. Like I said previously if they would have used the ethics of virtue system they would have went about things in an honest manner and even though it might not have saved the life of Detective Griffiths it would have put his killer in jail. Ethics training for our officers is very important to maintain order (Papenfuhs,2011). However, when really spending some time and thinking about this situation I wish our legal system could in some way take into account the pressure we put on cops and when we know for an absolute fact a serious crime as been committed that the criminal could still be punished regardless of the mistakes of cops. I don’t think the people should be able to get off that easy simply because of a legal mishap and in fact disgusts me that his has happens numerous times every year.
Although, some laws are brutal, they are necessary to keep order in the community and crime at a low. An example to represent a fair law in the code of Hammurabi is, “If he has broken the limb of a patrician, his limb shall be broken.” To put the quote in simpler terms, it states, “If you break a man’s limb he’ll break yours.” This is a fairly honorable law. If a person breaks someone’s arm they should expect a consequence and this is not exceptionally crude. A law such as this one is created to keep balance, peace, and reduce violence. Even though this may seem strict to some; the victim who endured the limb breaking would have to disagree.
In America, standard laws are usually common sense. Some examples are: no committing murder, no stealing, and unlawful drug possession. Even though many of those might be tempting and easy to break, I below that those laws are fair. Many, if not most, laws are meant to keep people controlled and safe. However, in Nightjohn, it was illegal for African Americans to be able to read or write.
The death penalty was abolished in 1965 by the government who believed it would stop innocent people from being killed even though many people in Britain believed that it shouldn’t be abolished. After the abolition of the death penalty 70% of people in Britain still believed that murderers should be hung. This shows that the social attitudes did not change. A final issue which social attitudes did not change towards is Homosexuality. In the year 1967 The Sexual Offences Act was put in place meaning that people could no longer be arrested for being homosexual.
In 19th century America, Bellamy believed there was too much crime present. In 20th century America, crime is no longer present, and becomes an ancient trait that people rarely fall back on. The reason for this halt in crime is the execution of economic and governmental reforms, and through them, crime fades away, due to no real motive to perform criminal acts. Instead, on the rare occasion that crimes are committed, it is guessed that certain ancestral trait caused the individual to commit the crime. Most of the individuals committing these crimes plead guilty because they don’t see a reason to try and win the case.
Petit larceny was punished less harshly because the value that was taking was much less compared to grand larceny. In the United States, larceny was adopted in the counties early history but in the twentieth century, legislatures eliminated it for a broad theft statute. Now prosecutors only had to worry about the intent to steal and value of the
Back in that time, they did not have jails that one could go to if they committed a crime; there was no time for that. In order to sustain order in the community, there has to be some set of laws. Modern day people see these laws as harsh but back in Babylonian time, it was not. These laws were set to teach the people a lesson. One law, “If a man has stolen goods from a temple, or house, he shall be put to death; and he that has received the stolen property from him shall be put to death.” This teaches men not to steal.
The practice of slavery was common during the American Revolution, but was mostly practiced in the south. But during the revolution, American revolutionaries thought about the morals of slavery, but were unable to change much at this time. However, slavery was able to be banned in the Northwest Territories, where it wasn’t too important to that region’s economy. Although the revolution was not directly able to ban slavery, it showed the issue and allowed future generations to solve
It was a hard time for those people always being accused for something they didn't do, and if they got raped treated wrong most of the law wouldn't do anything about it since their white and they don't care. Luckily like Maya it got better for those people and they could live their live semi-peacefully. There will always be racism and there is not much people can do about in the year 2010 there are laws that give all rights to other races and racism is a lot lower then it is now, but a few people still think that colored people should have no rights and thats
Prostitutes are not committing an inherently harmful act. While the spread of disease and other detriments are possible in the practice of prostitution, criminalization is a sure way of exacerbating rather than addressing such effects. We saw this quite clearly in the time of alcohol prohibition in this country. ...What makes prostitution a 'victimless crime' in the sense that no one is necessarily harmed by it is that there are consenting adults involved.
