Change Essay I want to change society’s relationship to animals and the planet through food. The best thing you can do to protect our environment and reduce pollution is by going vegan. Specifically that means not eating meat, eggs, and dairy products. Raising animals with the intent of turning them into food is an attack on the Earth and a waste of resources. According to a 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined. That might seem hard to believe; but it’s really not, if you think about the amount of nitrous oxide, methane, and ammonia livestock produce from their own waste and then think about the amount of livestock in America. Water pollution is another major issue resulting from the animal agriculture industry. All that livestock needs water, and individually they drink much more than the daily recommended amount for humans. The U.S. probably wastes millions of gallons of water on animals. The waste from factory farming produces pollutes water sources, because the animals have no sewage system. The factory farms use open lagoons for liquefied waste, which sometimes seeps into groundwater or overflows. For example, in North Carolina hog farms are common along with their massive lagoons. Storms from the ocean will and have already caused these lagoons to overflow, contaminating our water sources and consequently drowning the hogs. Our hunger problem in the U.S. and around the world would be solved if we didn’t have livestock. Time Magazine reports that we feed 70% of the grains and cereals grown in the U.S. to livestock. That statistic is probably the most ridiculous I’ve read, because it is such a simple solution to one of society’s largest issues and I can’t understand why it has never
