Organizational Change In a rapidly changing healthcare system, creating, advancing and sustaining an environment that is grounded in evidence-based practice (EBP) is vital to ensure that patients and families receive the best possible care. Today an expectation is that new information and research findings will be incorporated constantly and knowledgeably into clinical nursing practice (Pipe, Wellik, Buckda, Hansen, & Martyn, 2005). It is essential that York Healthcare embraces and fosters a culture that supports EBP philosophy and integrates new evidence into its culture. Organization history, vision and goals Anticipating the future needs of the community, a group of local residents in the 1950s began building awareness for the need for care close to home. By the 1960s this campaign became fully fledged, with the donation of land for the future hospital site and the formation of a hospital corporation. Approval from the provincial government was granted, in 1982, conditional on a community contribution of $5 million dollars. Within 18 months the residents of the region where able to meet the goal and doors of the hospital opened in March 1990. Caring for the community through partnerships and the pursuit of excellence is the hospital’s vision. The organization believes it can achieve this through their mission, to make every experience with us great. At York Healthcare each of the hospital staff is committed to delivering the best possible care while demonstrating the key values of compassion, leadership and responsibility, collaboration, creativity and innovation through progressive community care at the right time in the right place. Description of the change EBP is a systematic approach to determine the most current and relevant evidence upon which to base decisions about patient care (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2005). It
