Equality, Diversity and Rights within a Health and Social Care setting. In this essay, I will explain Equality, Diversity, and out Rights as human beings, I will also talk about how these things can affect us as individuals, and also how they can affect our communities. Equality is when all people are treated fairly and have the same value as others, however, this does not mean that everyone should be treated the exact same. With equality we have to recognise that different people have different needs. According to Stretch B’ and Whitehouse M’ ‘The word ‘equality’ is often linked to ‘opportunity’.
It is | | |not about treating everyone the same as they may have different needs to achieve the same outcome, to ensure | | |that everybody is treated equally and not less favourably, specific to their needs, including their race, | | |gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. | |Inclusion |This is to make certain and ensuring that there are no barriers that would exclude
People have different needs, ambitions and situations. Every person should have equality of opportunity. This means opening up access for everyone, ensuring that everyone has a chance to take part in society on an equal basis to be treated appropriately regardless to their differences. Equality is about treating people fairly and equally. Sometimes in order to treat people equally you have to treat them differently.
The social model of disability focus in improving the individual life in order for them to have a more autonomous life as possible, this model see’s the person/adult as a whole and not what is condition/disability is. For this model is society that disables people by designing and creating things that are suitable for the majority of the people, however the minority will still be discriminated. The medical model see the individual has having an impairment or disability of some way. This model tries to find the impairments/disabilities and attempts to correct them. I work with vulnerable adults with a diversity of medical conditions.
People need to feel that they are included – that they are in control of their own lives and that they are included in their community and wider society. Social inclusion is the process of promoting the values, relations and institutions that enable all people to participate in social, economic and political life on the basis of the quality of rights, equity and dignity. Code of Practice – The code of practice provides guidance to anyone who is working with or caring for adults who may lack capacity to make a
CU1517. 1.1 Diversity Treating each person in your care equally regardless of their age disability ethnicity culture belief race and sexual orientation Individuality should always be taken into account such as physical needs or communication barriers their care must be tailored to suit each person but not in such a way to give any preference to any one person or group. Equality Ensuring individuals or groups are treated fairly and no one individual or group is treated above another. Promoting equality should remove any discrimination against people. Inclusion Is involving a supervisor in all aspects of their care.
Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age. By recognising and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued. b. Equality means treating everyone equally regardless of their colour, age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability etc. it is different to treating people the same; different people have different needs, so individuality should be taken in to account.
Champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusion SHC53 Understand diversity, equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility 1.1 What do we mean by diversity, equality and inclusion? Diversity refers to groups within society. Different groups can be linked to; * gender * ethnicity * social background * cultural background * religion and beliefs * family structure * race * disabilities * age * appearances * sexuality * economic status Equality refers to individuals being treated as equals, and allowing all to have the same opportunities, and to be treated with respect and dignity and to be given the same opportunities to achieve. Inclusion is the process that includes all, while ensuring that the needs of the individuals are met, whilst overcoming the barriers to prevent everyone participating. Social Model The favoured model that is linked to my work is the social model, which focuses on the child or individual and not on their disability, ethnicity, gender, social background, ect; this model looks at the environment as the problem and not the individual thus enabling them independence and empowerment.
Having person-centred guidelines provides anti-discrimination practice and helps promote to each individual to their individual needs, their right to equal opportunities, independence, choice, dignity and safety. Ensuring freedom of choice. 1.3 Person-centred values should influence all aspects of social care because The Human Rights Act 1998 makes it a law and following the guidelines should ensure individuals are treated as an individual and have freedom of choice. Providing people with dignity and respect. Working alongside the guidelines of person-centred values should eliminate discrimination, abuse, lack of dignity and respect, service users making their own choices and restricting individuals being an individual.
Champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusion 1. Understand diversity, equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility 1.2 Explain models of practice that underpin equality ,diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility As a Senior Support Worker at Whitworth Lodge I have a responsibility to everyone within my care which includes Clients, Clients families, volunteers and staff to ensure that they are treated equally and fairly and to promote a Centre where people can freely participate with an equal status keeping in mind the Equality Act 2010 which covers many elements such as religion or beliefs, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, pregnancy, maternity, sex, marriage and civil partnerships. There are many other issues which may cause exclusion and discrimination issues such as physical appearance, the cleanliness of a person (which I sometimes come across in Home Care) due to neglect and living alone. My role is to ensure that all people whom I deal with will be dealt with dignity and respect and I will strive to provide an environment where all people feel a sense of belonging and inclusion whilst recognising that each person is unique and that specific individual needs are met and maintained. This in turn will allow everyone which I deal with to feel valued and included.
