Challenges to the Public Health Nutritionists in Nigeria BY Kasali AbdulFatah Ahmed Nutrition is an essential and fundamental aspect to existence of man on earth. Public health nutrition deals on issues that affect the whole population rather than specific nutritional needs of an individual; it focuses on promoting health and preventing related nutritional diseases. Nigeria (with a population of more than 140 million people with diversity in language, culture, and religious belief) is a place where public health nutritionists are faced with both intrinsic and extrinsic challenges. The rapid and unchecked population growth in Nigeria has built up to uncontrolled stress, poverty, and this has given rise to multiple effects of nutritional problems and diseases. For example, incident of cancer, hypertension, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, have drastically increased. Nigeria has recognised the need for public health nutritionists because of the vacancies and adverts seen recently in most Nigerian newspapers seeking for specialists in public health nutrition. This could be as a result of fresh challenges facing the nutritionists in Nigeria. The challenges are so many that only few would be discussed here. One of the challenges faced by nutritionists in Nigeria is finance. Nigerian nutritionists (even organised nutritional societies such as Nutrition Society of Nigeria) are finding it difficult to publish researches, organise seminars, workshops, conferences, and provide food aid to the poor. Seminar and publication could advance campaigns to help Nigerians understand the basic need for their health through nutritional topics and other health related topics.
