. “Maybe the war is over. Or maybe everyone is dead, and we are the last two soldiers left, and the one who survives will have won the war. Sometimes I think the world doesn’t exist anymore.” Good morning, Ms Collision and students. When someone mentions a challenge or you are forced into challenging situation, you initially think of it as a negative experience, just the word challenge has bad connotations. But what people don’t realise is that although the outcome may not always be positive, facing the challenge has enabled you to better understand yourself, experience something new and also better understand the world that you live in. If you look up the definition of challenge, you will find many different interpretations of the word, such as: a call or summons to engage in any contest, or, an act or statement of defiance; a call to confrontation. But I believe a challenge can’t be defined in a one sentence answer. Since everybody is an individual, everybody faces different challenges and finds different circumstances and situations challenging. “The Enemy” written by Davide Cali and illustrated by Serge Bloch, is a contemporary picture book that speaks to both adults and older children. It is set in a war and is narrated by a soldier who tells of his loneliness, fear of survival and his struggle between what is propaganda and what is reality. Through facing these fears, he is able to resolve his part of the fighting and finally discovering for himself what the war was truly about. The initial challenge of loneliness is addressed in the first few pages of the book with the beginning pictures showing just two holes and a shrub on a white background, this picture immediately shows the responder that this is a deserted place and they are on their own. This loneliness becomes a trial for the solider when he begins to start doubting whether if anyone is still
