Mis Assignment Major contribution of Vinton Gray Cerf and Robert Kahn Major Contributions of the Internet The major contribution to the internet made by Vinton Gray Cerf and Robert Elliot Kahn was their technical and managerial roles in which they played in the creation of TCP and IP protocols. These advancements in technology laid the foundation of are present day internet. Cerf and Kahn are today still leading the way for internet progression across the world. About 45 years ago, the predecessor to the Internet had only four nodes of the net. It was an experimental packet switching system. Then Cerf wrote the software that connected a Sigma 7 computer to the first packet switch of the ARPANET. By doing this each node was able to send information to the other. By 1972 there were perhaps 35 or so nodes of the ARPANET scattered around the United States, and some were in planning outside the U.S. In 1976, Bob and Cerf showed their TCP/IP technology would actually allow multiple packet switch nets to be interconnected in a uniform way. ARPANET had expanded not only across the United States, but also had a synchronous satellite hub. The present form of Internet actually comes from that technology. The important thing on Internet is the regional Internet registries that allocate IP address space to the Internet service providers can allocate the number of Internet addresses that are still left that. There are currently 4.3 billion unique addresses available in IP version 4, which are 32 bit. As the population of internet users is getting larger, there are not enough of these IP address to cover the demand of users. The solution to the problem is to shift to IP version 6, which has 128 bits of address space. IPv6 was standardized around 1996, and very few people implemented it.
