This segregation is being put into effect in order to prevent juveniles from being sexually or physically assaulted and to prevent more dangerous juveniles from injuring the current adult inmates. Another reason why more juveniles should be tried as adults is because detention centers do not provide the offender with a harsh enough reality of their actions. Such was the case with and kid named Shawn. On Christmas night 1998, the sixteen year old attacked and repeatedly stabbed his father with a knife while he slept. Shawn’s home life seemed to be the reasoning behind the brutal crime since it had recently been disrupted by his habitual marijuana use, his recent expulsion from school, and arrest for strong arm robbery.
Ricky was shot by a local rival gang, we, the audience don't know the name of the person who shot him, this tells us that the person who shot the gun isn't very important, which also tells us that anyone can murder anyone in this society. The director John Singleton uses camera, editing and soundtrack to emphasise the importance of this scene. The film “Boyz in the Hood” naturally shows this is the key scene as it also is the turning point of the film. Firstly, the way the director controls the camera is interesting. He explains the fear he felt when he heard the term since he was homosexual himself. He felt threatened and targeted immediately upon hearing this word. In time he realized the teenagers using the word did not even notice his existence. Studies have shown that memory and recall are more fallible than people think. That means many eyewitness identifications are responsible for many wrongful convictions.

The gangs also include the youth in their drug using, and selling. A lot of gangs use young kids to sell their drugs because less people expect children to be selling drugs. The structure that the gang gives the kids leads them into bad situations, and violence.
