Should schools allow or encourage students to use cell phones in school? I believe students should be allowed to use cell phones in school for learning purposes, in case of a change in plans or emergency, and just to be able to simply say hello. Schools NEED to educate students on the proper way to use a cell phone because more and more students get them every year. As of 2012, 62 percent of K-12 schools allow cell phones on the grounds and 24 percent of K-12 schools ban cell phones completely, according to T.H.E. Journal. Even though schools allow cell phones on grounds they aren’t allowed in the classroom. Some schools are concerned that this will result in cheating and cyber-bulling. Some great advantages of cell phone usage in schools are for learning purposes. If schools don’t have enough calculators or computers, students can use their cell phones as a tool to go on an educational website. They will be learning about technology. This will help students get engaged in learning and increase test scores. Another advantage of having a cell phone at school is in case of a change in plans or emergency. Most students are involved in sports or after school activities. If something gets canceled or moved to a later time, students will be able to call their parents to come pick them up or to let them know they are staying later. In case of emergency, such as a fire, tornado, or earthquake, students can call their parents to let them know what is going on. Parents will be relieved to know that their child is safe. Whether or not you agree with me, American culture is changing every day. School districts need to decide yearly on what their cell phones policies will be and how they will enforce it.
