Cell phones are everywhere.   How many people do you see talking on cell phones as you walk across campus?   I counted fifty-seven the last time I walked between classes.   In the United States over two hundred and twenty-four million people used cell phones as of October 2006, compared with approximately 4.3 million in 1990, according to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (www.iii.org).   Cell phones have become so common in our society that most of us probably take them for granted.   How often do you use your cell phone?   What would life be like without your cell phone?   I would miss being able to call my girlfriend any time I wanted.   I would also miss the feeling of security carrying a cell phone gives me.
Cell phones give us the convenience of always being able to get into contact with someone, provided we are in service range.   Seventy-four percent of Americans who own mobile phones say they have used their hand-held device in an emergency and gained valuable help (www.pewinternet.org).   I interviewed my grandmother and she said, “I always carry my cell phone in my purse in case of an emergency when I go out of town.”   My grandmother never leaves home without her cell phone when she travels in case of an emergency.   The last time she went out of town, she got a flat tire on a country road.   She used her cell phone to call a towing company to come and change it for her.   Twenty years ago, she would have had to walk to the nearest house and ask to use a phone.   Imagine if her vehicle would have got a flat in the middle of a blizzard.   She does not get around as good as she used too.   It’s a stretch, but that phone could one day save her life.
