Celebrities and stars, we all love to see them in our favorite movies and on television putting their best act forward. Some of us follow their every step and move and some are even looked up to by children and young adults. But what happens when those celebrities break the law? Are they given special consideration by law enforcement because of their fame and glamour? Some may argue that not all celebrities are punished to the full extent of the law as everyone else. They say money can buy your way out of problems, but the law is the law and it should be obeyed no matter what their status in this world may be. We have seen it one too many times. Celebrities being arrested for one offence or another. Celebrities have been arrested and charged with several crimes including assault, battery, kidnapping, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a concealed weapon but the main offense is driving under the influence. It seems as if every other day there is another celebrity in the news or tabloids that has been arrested for driving under the influence. In most states the legal blood alcohol level is eight tenths of a percent (Curtis, 2008). If someone is caught driving with their blood alcohol level at one eights of a percent or higher they will be arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, which in some states can be punishable by either jail time, fines or both. Most celebrity cases involving charges of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol occur in California. In California, punishment a first time DUI charge can include a fine of up to one thousand dollars, any where from 48 hours to six months jail time, you must attend a three to six month alcohol program and suspension of their driver license for six months (California Department of Motor Vehicle, 2009).
