Natalie Ettrick CYP 3.4 – Support children and young people’s health and safety 1.1 There are a number of factors to think about when you are planning for a healthy and safe environment or an activity with children and young people. You must remember everyone is an individual and may have particular needs. If you have a clear understanding of the following then it will become second nature to include safety in your planning. • Every child is an individual – with different needs depending on their age and abilities. You must think about this when planning activities, for example when they involve physical play, or if more consideration must be given to the needs of a child who has just become mobile than to an older child, when planning room layouts.
Whether working with babies or 3-4 yr old some layouts will be similar but the age and abilities of the children is important so therefore the different resources and equipment should be age appropriate and carry the usual safety markings, there should also be equipment and resources for children who may have special needs. Each child needs to feel safe in there surroundings, if they feel insecure it can impair their abilities to thrive and grow and learn especially if they have certain needs ie sensory impairment,allergies to foods, some allergies are so severe some children cannot even touch certain foods so when planning activities it is important to consider all health conditions and special needs for example hearing impairments,visual aids,etc etc. I feel is is important to place visual pictures and signs in areas that are vitally important to the health and safety of the children,like placing pictures of hands washing around toilet areas,sink areas were creative or messy play may be involved,pictures of walking not running when indoors, quiet voices, be kind children learn a lot from visual pictures rather than being told continuously to stop running, no shouting,they look at these pictures and are able say what it is they see by looking at each individual picture. Ratio is also important for instant one adult per 4 children or two adults per eight especially at meal times were one adult can supervise the children and one can help clear the tables. LEAD PACTICE IN PROMOTING THE WELL BEING AND RESILIENCE OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE. 1.1 A child`s well-being is of great importance and Understanding what affects children’s subjective well-being is vital if they are to be encouraged and supported to be active participants in society, their community and family. The evidence shows that a low level of subjective well-being is associated with a wide range of social and personal problems. Children need to be given the conditions to learn and develop. This includes cognitive and emotional development, fostered through access to play in the early years and high quality education in school, and physical development, for example through a nutritious diet.
1.1 Define the Term ‘duty of care’ Duty of care means that it is your duty to provide a good quality standard of care to the people you look after, your colleagues, your employer and yourself. This care must be provided at all times and must: * be carried out in a way that will keep people safe from harm * be carried out by acting in the best interest of individuals * be carried out within your own competence and do not do anything that cannot be done safely * work effectively as part of a team * Provide a high standard of practice and care at all times * remain professional at all times to maintain the good reputation of your profession * Keep clear and accurate records * Keep your knowledge and skills up to date * Maintain a safe working environment * Maintain personal hygiene 1.2 Describe how duty of care affects your own work role (think of the tasks you do) I must only carry out duties that are within my own job role, responsibility and competence. If I am asked to do a task that does not fall in line with the above then I must decline. I must follow and adhere to the correct companies policies and procedures and provide a standard of care in line with the principle ‘codes of practice’ in all aspects of my work. This includes acting in the best interests of the patients and ensuring their health, safety and welfare.
You must be accountable for keeping records safe, reporting problems, and for your own decisions. You must also be observant and keep your training and policies up to date. You must follow standard procedures in all care work this includes use of resources and equipment. As your role as a carer you must respect the individuals wishes, maintain confidentiality and recognise signs and symptoms of abuse, we must also make sure that the individual has their right to make their own decisions and respect them, report concerns to line manager. Understand support available for addressing dilemmas that may arise about duty of care.
First impressions are important for parents and carers as well as the children and young people. As a playworker, you will need to develop a range of techniques and strategies for interacting with children and young people. Whatever techniques you use, you must ensure that the activities are appropriate for the age and stage of development of the children and young people. Each child and young person is very different and may need to be treated individually, sometimes one-to-one, for example if you have a shy child you may guide them towards a one-to-one activity. You may need to monitor the noise levels in that particular area, and you should observe occasionally throughout the session to ensure that the child is settling in.
Unit 027 Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety Outcome 1 Understand how to plan and provide environments and services that support children and young people’s health and safety. Learning Outcome 1 There are a number of important factors to take into account when planning for healthy and safe environments whilst setting up activities and services with children and young people. It is necessary in planning activities to remember each individual’s needs and abilities and that all children need supervision at all time. Everyday I have to take into account the different children I have in my group and that each child has a different level of ability and needs compared to others so when I am setting up activities I need to ensure that each child will be able to take part and enjoy the activity as well as learn at the same time. Activities that I would have to put a lot of through into would be a physical exercise because this activity could be difficult for a child who has just learnt to walk.
As with all children and young people the activity they are participating in needs to be in a safe environment and all staff are responsible and accountable to ensure this. 2.In my place of work all staff are responsible for health and safety if for example we see a cracked or broken plug it is our duty to report it to our manager or an appropriate person and make sure it is not used until properly
Task 13.1 As a practitioner it’s your duty to observe and maintain correct procedures to ensure that the children are offered a stimulating environment which will further allow optimum possibilities for development. All those who work with or amongst children and young people have a crucial role to play in helping not only to shape aspects of their lives, but to also aid in enhancing their future development. Therefore it can be stated that how we set up our own working practices can affect children and young people’s development. The necessity of encouragement and expression to children of the importance of good physical and mental health through their diet, exercise and healthy. If we do not promote and encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle, it could results in the children having poorly developed immune system which in turn would cause them to be ill and have days off school which would affect their development.
Duty of Care: Definition Duty of Care is a legal obligation to always act in the best interests of everyone to ensure that those receiving healthcare services receive safe and appropriate care and safe from danger and misuse. It is a code of practice that should be adhered to by healthcare professionals in everything they do to ensure they stay within the legal requirements for their role and to ensure that they are protected in the event of a claim of malpractice or negligence. It is also important that healthcare professionals act with independence as they are responsible for the wellbeing of those they care for. They must stay within their own professional competence and confidence levels and do all that they can to keep those receiving care from them safe from harm, as those they look after are often the more vulnerable members of society. The healthcare professional must always keep front of mind that with this kind of role comes a certain amount of responsibility.
