When planning healthy and safe environments for children there are a number of factors to be considered. Safe areas to play need to be organised and a range of different activities prepared where the child can take part safely. You need to use your common sense when thinking about these. Remember each child is an individual and has his own needs to be met and they will have their own level of ability and understanding. This is influenced by their age and what stage of development they have reached. Be careful because their age does not necessarily coincide with their stage of development eg. if they have a disability or an impairment or learning difficulty. You may have to adapt play equipment or find suitable ways in order to offer these children the same opportunities as others whilst keeping them safe. Some children suffer with health problems eg. asthma and allergies, make sure that everyone dealing with that child knows about their problems and how to deal with them if they occur. Parent’s views are also important and need to be considered carefully, as some parents hold strong opinions about their child taking part in certain types of play eg. adventurous play. When purchasing new toys or equipment check that they have a recognised safety mark on them. This will mean that they are less likely to break or malfunction causing a potential risk. Only use equipment for the purpose which it was intended. Misuse will provide possible dangers and also insurance will not cover any accidents that happen when equipment is not used as it is intended. Make sure all equipment is ‘fit for purpose’ and in good condition. Every setting has to have a ‘duty of care’ which means that you are legally required to act ‘in loco parentis’ to ensure the health and safety of every child in your care.
