This paper will go into what psychopathology is and what causes it. There will be a brief overview of how culture is determining factor toward the expression of psychopathology. Following the brief overview will be an examination of the causes of psychopathology by using bio-psychosocial or the diathesis stress models. Concluding this paper will be an explanation of the changes in society’s perception of psychopathology as a function of historical time period.
Elements of a recognised framework by Cormack (2000) will be used as a guideline through the critique process. Critique is defined by Polit et al (2000) as a careful critical appraisal of the strengths and limitations of a piece of research. They state that a written critique should serve as a guide to researchers and practitioners, and should help to advance a particular area of knowledge. The critique should also help those who are practising nursing, to decide how the findings from a study can be best incorporated into practice (Nieswiadomy, 2002). Knapp (1998) points out that if research is to provide convincing evidence on which to base practice, it must be capable of withstanding scrutiny regarding the quality and relevance of the researchers work.
Discuss how current counselling and psychotherapy practice emerged from psychiatry and psychology. Analyse the similarities and differences between psychotherapy and counselling practices. I will assess the origins of psychoanalysis and how this impacted on subsequent schools of thought.I will discuss the importance of Freud and how some of his theories were challenged by later psychologists resulting in differing models for therapeutic practice.I will explore how these models are applied to contemporary counselling and psychotherapy. I aim to analyse the similarities and differences between counselling and psychotherapy through critical evaluation of how these practices work within society today. By establishing differences between psychiatry and psychology,how counselling and psychotherapy emerged from these disciplines becomes clearer.Psychiatry relates to the process of healing the mind through medical intervention.Psychology has its roots within academic study and research of human and animal perception.Psychoanalysis is ‘interested in exploration of the unconscious mind in order to cure’.

It is not so much a therapy about individual problems, as it is a therapy on the problem of life, or living, as applied to the clients own sense of self in the world (Van Deurzen & Adams, 2011). Praxis Overview Praxis has been defined in a number of ways for different disciplines. For the discipline of nursing it has been described as the art of the coming together of science and practice and linking practice and theory (Kilpatrick, 2008). Praxis can arise at an individual or a group level. At the individual level it is recognizing and reflecting on an issue that restricts one’s abilities and experiences, then taking action to change the issue for themselves and others affected (Chinn & Kramer, 2011).

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the main theoretical concepts and ideas that underpin research approaches used in nursing. To be precise, two main methodologies will be discussed with an aim to discuss the key stages involved in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. In aid to buffer this study, two published evidenced based papers have been used as a basis in this essay in effort to critique the main methodological differences between qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The qualitative paper to be critiqued in this essay bares a title of “psychiatric care as seen by the attempted suicide patient” (A) while the quantitative essay (B) stands out with a unique title of “controlled trial of nursing intervention for breathlessness in patients with lung cancer” as named by their respective authors after conducting research. According to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) research is essential to nursing field to enhance evidence based practice.
