Causes of Homelessness Growing up in the richest country in the world has taught me everything but how to be appreciative. I have food, the newest fashions, a nice home in a suburban area, and a family that functions well enough for me. Being in an environment such as this one has put me in a position to help however, to be blinded by the fact that people are in need of help. Even though I have had hardships, they do not measure up to the hardships of other American citizens. I have always been more concerned than curious as to how people get into these tough situations. It was this that helped me decide on the topic of “Causes of Homeless.” Often times we, as humans, forget and neglect the simple fact that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. During the research process I began to realize that one cannot just become homeless. There are several ways and circumstances in which people become engrossed in such a situation. “There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop financial crisis, natural disasters, and we cannot prevent conflict, but when we know where the hungry , the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help”(Camillus House). Camillus House concluded that there are several causes of homelessness in America. Some causes of homelessness are poverty, decline in public assistance, domestic violence, and mental illness. Most of these causes are obvious and some have been overlooked in the process of expected judging of the homeless. Camillus House also states that 18 percent of America’s population is considered to be homeless based on the individual definitions of homeless.
