However, these teenagers also live in fear of getting caught for drinking and thus, consume their alcohol in unsafe environments; typically, these dwellings are where they can “escape” disturbances and predicaments, but usually encounter more. These environments are generally unsupervised and in groups of “children” that are ignorant of responsible drinking habits. Due to their apprehension of being caught, teenagers tend to never confess to an adult of the troubles they encountered as they drank and, therefore, may further affect their experience. Thus, if the drinking age was lowered to eighteen, a teenager would have the ability to be more straightforward with their drinking and would be able to drink in more supervised locations. They would also begin to drink in moderation since there is no longer the appeal of a “forbidden” rebellion.
In reference to drugs, that would mean we as US citizens would have a legal right to buy, use, sell, and outright possess a certain amount of an illicit drug without penalty. Being that cocaine is addictive and destructive in large and repeated doses, I am against legalizing cocaine. The increased levels of ruthless behavior, overdoses, drug wars, and overall decline in the neighborhood across the country would be devastating. The inner cities would suffer an even greater decline in despair and hopelessness due to the streets being overly infested with open drug dealing. Although illegal activities occur on a daily basis, I think if cocaine was legal, people would be dying in the streets.
Were being an addict and having a mental illness both full under a medical problem. The reason being is that an addict is going to need help to be able to kick their addiction. The biggest issue to look at is that surveys show that some people are ashamed to admit that they know someone in their family that has an addiction problem. And if you are ashamed or scared to admit the problem then maybe this paper will help with that shame. Because if you are ashamed to admit the problem then the person can not get the help they need.
Mood disorders are thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Traumatic events can also cause a person to become depressed. Personality disorders – affects the individual's patterns of thinking, feelings and behaviour. People with a personality disorder may find that their beliefs and attitudes are different from the majority of people. Others may find the individual's behaviour unusual, or erratic and may find it difficult to be around them.
Leshner states, “As with many other brain diseases, addiction has embedded behavioral and social-context aspects that are important parts of the disorder itself” (Leshner). Recognizing addiction as a mental illness can help reduce the health and social costs that are directly related to treating addiction. Research has exposed that drug abuse is a severe health issue, as well as a social issue. Addicts become so obsessed with consuming the substance it causes their immune systems to shut down and causes the addict to be incapable of functioning properly in a social setting. Addiction has severe negative consequences affecting the addict’s mental and physical well being.
The drug addicts lose all respect for themselves and these addictions end up taking over their lives. Maybe the addicts are right when they say the addictions are their own fault and aren’t a reflection towards their troubled childhood. Addicts may just get caught up in the wrong situation at the wrong time and end up getting addicted to a drug just to fit in with peers. Drug addictions will create emotional distress no matter whose fault it
Personality and cognitive factors, such as optimism and the tendency to view challenges in a positive or negative way, as well as social factors, such as the availability and use of social support, appear to influence how people adjust to trauma (Brewin, 2005). For example, both patient parents were drugs addicts who were not avaliable to her at an early age as she would have loved. This may have laid the foundation for her sucepitability to depression, as well as poor coping
Many of the believe depression can be unlearned behavior as well. As stated before depression is caused and linked to stress in an individual’s life. The lack or none exist of personal skills can be link to stress also. The stress in a person life may cause them not to receive many positive strengthening. These things give individual a sense of pleasure and fulfillment.
In my Psychology book in one chapter it talked about the alcohol impairment and how it can then create bad judgment. Because alcohol acts to depress the reticular activating system, several things occur. The altering mechanism is depressed such that a person does not become aware of potentially hazardous or dangerous situations that the sensory functions detect. The sensory functions themselves are deteriorated and may not be supplying complete or correct information to the brain. A person's motor of functions is impaired; yet, because of alcohol's depressant effect that person will feel less inhibited and more self confident about themselves.
Malfunction of these circuits can lead to characteristic biological, psychological, social malfunction. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and high-risk behaviors. Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, lack of behavioral control, craving, decreased recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Much like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery treatment, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.
