Catherine Martin was born on January 26, 1965 in Lindfield, New South Wales. She is an Australian costume designer, set designer, production designer and film producer.
History of the Designer
Martin attended North Sydney Girls High School, working as an usherette at the Roseville theatre. When she studied at the Sydney College of the Arts, she took visual arts and then took pattern cutting when she attended East Sydney Technical College. Martin collaborated with her classmate, Baz Luhrmann, when she did a Diploma Design course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). She had dropped out of art school and was working as a seamstress, a radio ad inspiring her to apply to NIDA. Luhrmann is now her husband (since 1997), they have two children, Lilian Amanda Luhrmann (born 2003) and William Alexander Lurhmann (born 2005).
Martin worked for Luhrmann, his theatre ensemble Six Year Olds. After being hired to design a production of Lake Lost for the Australian Opera, Martin earned a Victorian Green Room Award for Best Design. This created opportunities for Martin and since then, she has design most of her husbands productions, including a Midsummer Night’s Dream, this lead her to winning the Sydney Theatre Critic’s Award for Best Opera Design. She worked on Romeo + Juliet in 1996, directed by Luhrmann, for which she received a BAFTA for Best Production Design and an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Art Direction.
For the past twenty years, Martin’s collaborations have been essential and linked to Luhrmann’s plays, feature films and operas.
