The product of the reaction is metal salt called zinc iodide. Zinc iodide is the precipitate left in the tube after heating it over the Bunsen burner and evaporating the solvent. In lab that we conducted, iodine is always the limiting reagent (less moles than zinc). The iodine is all used up, which means all the mass is used up, while there is excess zinc in every experiment.
