Case: The New Payroll Clerk: Chapter 8 Case: The New Payroll Clerk: Chapter 8 Lack of Orientation Orientation Overview Companies are always hiring new people, and many times the new hire will want to begin to make an impact on their new role with the company immediately. In the case, “The New Payroll Clerk,” we have a new employee Irene Kemp that is starting her first day on the job at Key Data Processing Co. (KDP). After her long day, she shares her experience with her fifteen-year-old son who concludes in a quick summary that the KDP sounds disorganized. If her son were able to come to this conclusion than Irene, who actually had to deal with it would seem even more in a confusion state. From the time, that Irene was greeted until the time she left, very little orientation was conducted. KDP lack of an orientation is hurting a new employee who is trying to put a good foot forward and should look to HR as a place to help address the lack of orientation. Indentifying the Chaos When Irene arrived at KDP, a personnel assistant greeted her. It would seem that the personnel assistant did go over the forms, yet it still left Irene confused. It is unknown if there was any structured material that ensured everything was covered. After the paperwork, she was instructed to go to the accounting department without anyone to escort her or whom she should be meeting. This would mean that no one covered the emergency routes and locations or even where the bathrooms were located. If there was a fire alarm, it could put Irene at risk. After arriving at the accounting department, she was met by another employee and not the manager. The employee instead of helping seemed to state all the negatives about the company and the various departments and management. Finally, after two hours, the manager Fran had met her, and they had a meeting at 10:45 to
