The computer industry is a fast-paced and ever changing business environment. It was vital for companies such as Dell Computer Corporation to recognize relevant trends and to satisfy a market that requires the most innovative technology available. Technological breakthroughs over the decades brought about dramatic size reductions in the size of the computers and significantly increased the computing power of the computers. There was new entry into the computer industry. This opened up new market segments like minicomputers and portables. Dell also started eyeing retail markets. The main reason for the shape the industry was taking was due to the factors of technical advancement and the pricing breakthroughs. The portable computers were possible because of technical advancements like LCD screens, improved battery technology and less energy consuming HDDs. Several leading firms started venturing into the portable computers segment with the hope that the market would further rise. There was a drastic reduction in the weight of the portable computers because of dramatic size decrease of the components.
