Introduction Mr X is a 45 year old man who has presented himself to me with a desire for hypnotherapy, in order to help him understand and overcome the issues which are holding him back in life. During the initial consultation with Mr X I would aim to expound the issues put forward by the client. Firstly, to ensure that I fully understand what the client is telling me and to gain clarity for both myself and the client. Secondly, by expounding the issues I will be starting to help Mr X to unravel his confused feelings into separate more manageable issues. Thirdly, the ensuing clarification and conversation will hopefully aid the rapport building process, which is so vital for successful treatment. Mr X will be beginning to put his trust and faith in me as a therapist, as someone who can provide him with the vehicle to escape his negative belief system, which appears to be deeply ingrained. Displaying a thorough understanding of the client’s issues are the foundation stones of rapport and ultimately success. Ethical Considerations At the initial consultation I would also ensure that I am ethically the correct person to be dealing with Mr X’s issues. * By checking his medical history, remembering neurosis not psychosis. * Ensuring that there is no physical attraction which could deter from the treatment. * I would establish the costing of the treatment, so prevent any future embarrassing, misunderstanding. * I would fully explain what Mr X could reasonably expect to gain from the treatment and the timescale in which to see his desired results, clearly outlining any limitations. * I would explain the parameters of the confidentiality; that everything Mr X told me would remain confidential unless he disclosed something that would either harm himself or another person. * That I would not touch the client without his permission and without
