L’Aquila is located in the Abruzzo region, approximately 100 kilometres to the east-north-east of Rome. It is positioned at an altitude 721 meters in the Valley of the Aterno-Pescara in the central Apennines. The southern part of Italy is situated on the border of the Eurasian and African plates. When did it happen? Date, Time (local), Duration, Include the sequence of events to show the speed of onset and the pace of management and recover The earthquake in L’Aquila took place at 3.32am on Monday the 6th of April 2009. The earthquake lasted for approximately 14 seconds. The epicenter was in Tornimparte, Abruzzo, which is 7 km northwest of the town of L’Aquila. The depth of the earthquake was approximately 8.8 km. There were more than a dozen aftershocks, felt over a period of two days. The death toll was 308 and 1,500 injured. 10000-15000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. This earthquake was Italy’s deadliest in over three decades. Italy's Civil Protection agency reported at least 1,500 injured and 50,000 without shelter. For days following there were thousands of people working on the rescue effort. Five mixed operations centres (Centri Operativi Misti) were very quickly at work and relief columns were quickly mobilised by the regions of Italy. The Italian civil protection system, had undergone very significant transformation and development in recent years prior to the earthquake, particularly towards the consolidation of organised volunteer forces.
