Slave masters were under the impression that slaves were having church so when caught, of course slaves had to ‘pay the price’. Slaves were punished physically and sometimes even murdered for this small act. “The master might claim the body of his property but could never quite claim their soul” (L.Rivers) Slavery was controlled in many different ways so no one could actually subdue this epidemic. However, the article shows how master to slave relationships were in Florida. Slaves were simply to obey their masters and do whatever what asked of them.
In chapter seven of A History of Hope a woman who went by the name of Mother Jones prove to be a very powerful example of someone who thoroughly believed and lived by the above quote. A woman who clearly embraced this concept, Isabella Baumfree, led a life that was packed with accomplishments of all sorts. As a mother, Abolitionist, Minister, Ex-Slave, and Woman's Rights Activist, Isabelle certainly was able to make her mark on history in the time that she had here. Born a slave, it would be many years before Isabella would walk to freedom, begin her life of activism and eventually become the woman we know today as Sojourner Truth.
Corrie ten Boom Helping Jews hide during World War II A well known activist who helped save nearly 800 Jews, Cornelia Johanna Arnolda ten Boom was an inspiration to help others in need, but she has done so much more. Corrie ten Boom has showed Americans that everyone matters and nobody should have to hide. Everyone should be able to live a normal life out in the open. She left a lasting legacy as a very caring person who was willing to help anyone. The beginning of ten Boom’s life started out in the Netherlands when she was born on April 15, 1892.

Women were not eager to leave their children and their way of life to start working. However the demand for workers was so great that the government decided to launch a propaganda campaign that promoted a fictional character called Rosie the Riveter. Rosie was pretty, hardworking and most importantly patriotic. Rosie was supposed to motivate women, provoke a sense of self-worth and create the idea that they could be of service to their country just like men. In the end it worked, According to Aja Sorensen’s, Rosie the Riveter,” 12 million women (one quarter of the workforce) were already working and by the end of the war, the number was up to 18 million, which was one third of the workforce” (Sorensen).
Addams also wrote a few books that described her life and the most well-known books could list out such as Newer Ideals of Peace in 1907, the Spirit of Youth in 1909 and especially the Twenty Years at Hull House in 1910 (Brown 402). Jane Addams, as a reformer who’s always aiming to establish the freedom and the rights for labor and social worker classes, spent whole life to work for people. As a woman always put her efforts to work for peace and bring peace to others, she awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 as a reward that her efforts had been recognized and demonstrating by others. The influence that Jane Addams had made to society was unforgettable. The impacts that she made had changed the minds and the direction of society towards women and African-American.
Due to her persistence in wanting to learn she became a well known figure around the world which leads to her come to the attention of an abolitionist who would eventually help disestablish the social norm of 'owning' a slave.
