Case Study Check Point From age five through seventeen years, during his school years; Marios language went through many different stages. Around age five when Mario started kindergarten his stronger language was Spanish. Although he had a Spanish accent, it did not hinder his social skills. He had heard and picked up on some English prior to school from care givers outside of the home as well as playmates. Therefore, within a few months, Marios language of English development was proficient and growing rapidly. Later in his school years, a speech therapist misinterpreted his Spanish accent with speech impairment and thought he needed more help with his vocabulary, and syntax. Around age seven Mario was put in speech therapy to encourage his language development; to increase his understanding of temporal words, irregular and literal forms interpretations of words and/or phrases. By the time Mario was eight years old; his third grade teacher could not even tell he spoke another language other than English. His accent was gone and he continued to excel in both languages. His language development through age eight included an increase in awareness of various terminologies used in academic disciplines, the ability to understand complex and multi-clause sentences, and many more. Mario received a 5 on a 7-point scale in reading, writing, and language usage in Spanish in the fifth grade while spending a semester in Bolivia.
