Case Scenario Self Esteem While self-concept, self-esteem and self-efficacy are similar concepts, there are many differences. Self-concept are the facts one knows about themselves. Self-concept is derived from a person's self-esteem . If a person has low self-esteem, their self-concept will most likely be on the negative side. For example, a person with low self-esteem might say “I have a House.” While it is a fact about themselves, they do not show joy or sorrow about it. Self-esteem, on the other hand, is an opinion of ourselves. High self-esteem can include confidence in ourselves, not caring what another person thinks of you and accepting yourself for who you are. Low self-esteem includes pessimism, low confidence and doing things for others rather than yourself. And finally self-efficacy: a persons belief in their own self competence. A person may feel comfortable and confident in one area. But not in another. Eg, you may feel confident at a swim meet, but not in typing class. I think Pat feels how most people would feel when starting a new job, nervous and intimidated. At Pat's old job she had high self-esteem, which gave her a positive-concept of herself. Now she is at a new job with new people. Her self-esteem may be lowered due to the fact that she is older with children. While the other employees are younger and have a more exciting life. That also hurts her self-concept. She knows she is older and on a different level than Chris and is therefore afraid to make contact with him or anyone else at her new job. Due to the assumption I get from reading this article, I think Pat's self-concept, self-esteem and self-efficacy will have a negative impact with developing a relationship with her co-workers. She seems to feel out of place. People can sense when someone is uncomfortable. And that can result in a negative view of the
