Case for Analysis: The University Art Museum Jose Daniel Sandoval G010L19 Case Summary Basically this case is about the museum of a certain university and the way it has been administered these past years, the Museum was really important to the university, it was always shown on the cover of their brochures and catalogs. The building for the museum was given to the university around 1929 by an alumnus who was the son of the university’s first president. This museum has always been administered in a way that benefits the faculty of arts, mainly used by its graduate students. This way of working changed with the arrival of a new museum director in 1998 and with this our case analysis begins. Upon his arrival the new director had announced that he looked upon the museum as a “major community resource” and intended to “make the tremendous artistic and scholarly resources of the museum fully available to the academic community as well as to the public”. It soon became clear that what he meant by “community” and what the faculty and students understood by these words were not the same. Soon the museum changed dramatically in who were the costumers and to who it was oriented; it became noisy, crowded and full of 4th graders that went to the museum on school trips. What brought all this to a head was an Islamic art exhibit in late 2000, the new director instead of inviting one of the university’s own faculty members to deliver the customary talk at the opening, he brought in a cultural attaché of one of the Arab embassies in Washington. Six months later in June 2001, his resignation was announced. A new search committee had to be appointed so the academic senate proceeded to make a meeting to decide who was going to be appointed to this new committee, previous meetings were conducted with almost no discussion and everyone agreed on the terms, this
