Chapter 1 Case Study 1. I would rate Jennifer Reingold’s effectiveness and efficiency mediocre. She felt out of control and thought things weren’t in order. Jennifer was also more focused on getting responsibilities done fast/efficient rather than doing it effective/the right way. She did not do well with balancing effectiveness and efficiency. Also, she was not effective in fixing problems. However, she was a decent leader and used many managerial functions. 2. The eight managerial functions that are evident in this case are: Planning – Jennifer had to design a new agenda and write business plan by 4 PM. Decision Making – Jennifer had to launch a new product, and deal with the challenges a boss typically faces. She also had to decide whether to move a guy from Asia to the inventory-reduction task force, determine why all the new-hire MBAs are quitting, and decide what she was going to say in her TV interview. Organizing – Jennifer had to plan what to do and say to the people, and she had organize her TV interview address. Communicating – Jennifer had an obligation to communicate with her employers. Leading - Jennifer took a series of “leadership inventories” which would analyze in conjunction with performance. She also had to be a leader because she was the vice president of the company and had to be a role model. 3. This case is like any managers typical day because most managers have their own problems to work through and must use all of the managerial functions. Although the day is extra hectic in Jennifer’s situation, each manager has to expect the worst to happen in any particular day. You have to be prepared for each and every scenario. However, if this were to happen every day Jennifer would have to find a new job. The only difference between this story and real life is that it is set 11 years in the future. 4.
