Case Study: The Baron This particular case is about Baron Coburg who was a property owner in Western Europe. The Baron was responsible for of many peasants who occupied the lands surrounding his castle. This particular year the Baron had come up with a new plan for providing food. The Baron wanted to take 30 acres of land and plant wheat, which should produce five bushels of wheat per acre. Five bushels of wheat per acre in a 30-acre plot will produce 150 bushels of wheat. This should be enough to supply the peasants in the area. After making the decision of what to plant, the Baron needed to decide who should do the farming for him. The Baron chose Ivan to farm 20 acres of land and Frederick to farm the remaining 10 acres. The Baron provided Ivan 20 bushels of wheat for seed and 20 pounds of fertilizer and gave Ivan 10 bushels of wheat for seed and 10 pounds of fertilizer. The Baron also provided each farmer a young ox, which would be good for another 10 years of farming. Each farmer did have to make arrangements with the plow maker for a plow. After the farming season both farmers returned with their harvest and equipment that the Baron provided for them. Ivan appeared to have a good harvest and provided the Baron with 223 bushels of wheat. However, of that 223 bushel, the plow maker needed to be paid three bushel for the plow, which is beyond repair. Before Ivan can farm again, he will need to buy another plow. Frederick also appeared to have a very good harvest and provided the Baron with 105 bushels of wheat from the 10 acres he farmed. Frederick also returned the ox and the plow, which he had already paid in full. The plow will be available for use the next farming season. The Baron was very pleased with both farmers; however, he was unsure who the better farmer was between the two of them. In order to find out which farmer done better the Baron
