Cartoon Analysis In the cartoon drawn by Loren Fishman you can see the rear of a cow and it’s udder. On the four teats of it you can read the words “Skim”, “2%”, “Half and Half” and “Soy”. Also it’s subtitles with the sentence “The miracle of genetic engineering”. The cow is colored white with black dots and its udder in pink. The cartoon wants to criticize the increased use of genetic engineering and its consequences. The labeled teats convey the impression of unnaturalness and want to show the viewer how genetic engineering interferes in nature. Though products like e.g. soy milk became absolutely essential for consumers and especially lactose-intolerant people, it’s criticized by showing the next step, like creating custom DNA cows. So society has to ask itself when the step of incorrect intervention starts. But there are bigger question to be asked: How far would the economy go, to satisfy their consumer? How would natural resource (milk is only one example) given to mankind be misused only because of scientific achievements? The uncertain balance between luxury and the human responsibility for nature is on hand. Furthermore the ironic caption, especially the word “miracle” of the comic underlines Fishman’s negative attitude towards genetic engineering. It does not only demonstrate what genetic engineering can do but also alludes to miracles that can only be created by gods or other supernatural spirits. So the extraordinary things become ordinary, which leads to a global disappointment and even more pride through
