Cars and Computers There have been times when everyone thought that computers would not only take over the world but also destroy it. Now computers have become a part of everything. Our phones, our jobs, even our cars. Every car has a computer in it no matter the size. Cop cars have computers that are credited for helping find lost people, criminals and more. There will be a time where a computer will control the entire car and not just parts of it. “Computerized automotive systems are an ongoing evolution, continually improved from year to year to provide more efficient and more powerful cars. The basic fundamentals of the internal-combustion engine have not changed much since the beginning of the 20th century, but the need for tighter emissions standards coupled with fresh technology have made the on-board computer indispensable (Laurens).” Car engines were made with simple designs and mechanically controlled parts. They were made of distributors and ignition timing controls. Cars now could contain up to, but not limited to fifty microprocessors. This has made it harder for a person to work on their own car but it has also made it easier for the car to be serviced. During the 1970s emissions weren’t as relevant to anyone as was the speed and horsepower of a car. It wasn’t until the 1970s that federal mandates regarding cars emissions started appearing. “Most cars of this time period were fueled by carburetors, and very few ran with mechanical fuel injection, so the need for on-board computers evolved slowly (Laurens).” The computers role in monitoring emissions is keeping track of the pollution being blown through the exhaust. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) was another computer invented system for the car. Your ABS allows you to brake as hard or as quick as you can, and still allows you to control your steering efficiently. This helped decrease fender
