Carlos Slim Helú, now the wealthiest man on Earth, is a highly recognized businessman and entrepreneur from Mexico, who is the developer and founder of the Carso Group. He was born in Mexico City on January 28th 1940, son of a Lebanese migrant who owned several businesses in the city. He graduated from civil engineering school at the Autonomous National University of Mexico, and worked for the University teaching algebra and programming. Years after Slim married to Soumaya Domit Gemayel, he started his career by founding an investment company called Investora Bursátil and becoming the president of Management. Being a determined entrepreneur, and due to the growing success of his company, Slim acquired other businesses dedicated principally to real estate and construction. Together with his own businesses, he became a shareholder of another few private companies. After improving remarkably his reputation and the number of his acquired assets, he founded the Carso Group, which was the unification of all his principal companies. It was focused on the activities of industry, commerce, construction, mining, food, and tobacco. Despite the 1982 financial crisis in Mexico, when economy was practically paralyzed, Slim never gave up on his investments. He was clever enough to secure his investments on economically solid enterprises such as General Tire, Sanborns, and Reynolds Aluminio. He kept his investments up to 1984 when economy flourished again, so he was able to retrieve what he had invested. This one was a really intelligent strategy to keep the crisis from affecting his entire financial progress; keep the investments safe and moving to avoid the consequences of the economical decay of the time. Thanks to his great management of investments, he was able years later to expand them to a variety of retail stores, international fast food brands, and local insurance
