I am living while I’m living to the father I will pray only him know how we get through every day.” (Banton) I believe that those opening statements hold so much meaning as the bible clearly states not to put trust in human leaders as no human being can save you. When they die, they return to the dust and on that day all their plans come to an end. (King James Bible, Psalm 146:3, 4) The purpose of the Government falls between the lines of governing, managing and protecting the individual rights of its citizens, ensuring proper use of force by specifying, clarifying and enforcing laws, ensuring proper infrastructure (such as hospitals, roads, schools) is set up and well maintained, etc. However, government past and present throughout the Caribbean have failed citizens in so many ways that most citizens sought “refuge” in places such as the USA, England and Canada. Thus the statement, “who can afford to run, will run but what about those who can’t, they will have to stay” (Banton) Over the past few decades, the cost of food has been soaring yet our Minister of Food Production is still warning about more of this inflation. The latest available data from the Central Statistical Office shows that the inflation rate is now at 12.6 per cent, year on year, i.e. in the last year food prices have risen on average 12.6 per cent ("Food prices up again") due to the increase in the price of grain around the world. ("OECD-FAO expect slower global agricultural production growth”). Grains form the basis of the food chain, so for example, if the price of animal feed was to increase, the price of meat will increase as well as all other animal-related products.
