Careers in Lodging and Food and Beverage Marco Albarran Introduction to Hospitality May 5, 2013 Abstract This paper will describe the various types of management careers that are offered in the Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries. I will also compare and contrast the differences between the functions of General Management within the two industries. In the assignment I will also analyze and describe the growth in overall employment within these two industries and how the overall growth will be forecasted in the next ten years. I will recommend three human resource practices in which each industry can better recruit and retain management talent for their respective industries. The hospitality businesses are open 365 days a year and 24 hours a day (Walker 2013, p.17); the Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries are one of the world’s biggest employers. The industry has several different positions available from entry level to managerial positions. There are numerous opportunities for management careers within the lodging and food and beverages industry such as; Front Office Manager, Director of Catering and Catering Sales Manager, Hotel Manager, Director of Food and Beverage, Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager. These positions all require a background in customer service as well as a working knowledge of how the two industries work together in order to make the customer happy and a loyal patron of their establishments. The Front Office Manager or FOM is responsible for enhancing guest services by constantly developing services to meet guest needs (Walker 2013, p. 98) . This position is in the hub of the hotel and is a very visible high presence position. The front office manager is the leader in the chain of command for the hotel, the customer complaints come to this person before anyone else. So, they must be highly skilled in customer
