Definition of Confusion Confusion is the inability to think as clearly or quickly as you normally do. You may feel disoriented and having difficulty paying attention, remembering, and making decisions. Confusion may come on quickly or slowly over time, depending on the cause. Many times, confusion is temporary. Other times it is permanent and not curable. It may be associated with delirium or dementia .Confusion is more common in the elderly, and often occurs during a hospital stay. Some confused people may have strange or unusual behavior or may act aggressively Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. Most types of dementia are nonreversible (degenerative). Nonreversible means the changes in the brain that are causing the dementia cannot be stopped or turned back. . The following medical conditions also can lead to dementia: Alzheimer, Huntington's disease, Multiple sclerosis, infections that can affect the brain, such as HIV /AIDS and Lyme disease, Parkinson's disease, Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy Some causes of dementia may be stopped or reversed if they are found soon enough, including: brain injury, brain tumors, chronic alcohol abuse, changes in blood sugar, sodium, and calcium level, low vitamin B12 level, use of certain medications. Dementia usually occurs in older age. It is rare in people under age 60. The risk for dementia increases as a person gets older Delirium is an acute psychotic state usually caused by a specific physical illness that affects the brain.
