Annabel Johnson Prof. Holchens ENGL 1100 12 October 2010 Essay #2: Capturing the moment “A picture is worth a thousand words” is a popular saying that many people have said or heard. Some people want to be in the moment, and some want to capture the moment in a photograph and then look at it later. Everybody in the world has at least one camera or used a camera once in their lifetime to capture a special moment. That special moment becomes a photographic document and evidence where we can come back to. Then people will start to realize that photography is very important in our lives, but I can agree and disagree with that because photography can be interpreted and looked at in many different ways. In Susan Sontag’s essay “On Photography”, there were a few parts where I agree and disagree with her. One of the parts where I disagree with her was when she said that if parents don’t take pictures of their children, then that is parental indifference. In my opinion, some parents actually don’t have the time to take pictures and they might prefer to be in the moment and spend time with their kids instead of taking pictures. Taking pictures might actually waste the precious time where you can spend it with the child instead of taking pictures of them. There is no rule that says “if you have children, then you must take pictures of them”. The part where I agree with Susan Sontag was when she said “A way of certifying experience, taking photographs is also a way of refusing it”. I coincide with her on this statement because I feel that if you are experiencing something, you should cherish that moment and be in the moment. For example, there are many tourists who bring a camera and take pictures wherever they go. But are they really enjoying the moment? Or are they just taking pictures because they have nothing better to do? I feel that taking pictures with a camera
