Without capital punishment (death penalty) our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. Discuss Capital punishment is being termed as ‘the death sentence awarded for capital offences like crimes involving planned murder, multiple murders, repeated crimes, rape and murder etc where in the criminal provisions consider such persons as a gross danger to the existence of the society and provide death punishment’ , Legal-explanations (2004). The existence of it came way back in the 1500s where major offences carried the death penalty. Yet, one cannot rule out the benefits capital punishment brings to the society. Such benefits include deterrence of crime and bringing about justice. However, considering the magnitude of the punishment being mete out to the criminal, the question of it being ethical comes in as well. As simple as this concept may seem, capital punishment actually works. Ever since the death penalty was made Legal in Singapore, there was a drastic drop in crime rate. Furthermore, ‘The city-state had the highest per-capita execution rate in the world between 1994 and 1999, estimated by the United Nations to be 1.357 executions per hundred thousand of population during that period’, UNODC (2001). Hence, chances of getting a parole are so minute that it makes execution a virtual certainty. Therefore, capital punishment has an effect on potential criminals’ psychological state of mind that death is a certainty if they are ever to be caught by the arms of law. This sort of psychological impact on the person will no doubt make him think twice before committing crimes. However, that being said, the deterrent method only works on psychologically sane people. Due to them having some mental illness or defects, it makes thinking logically impossible for this unique group of offenders.
